Boards and success
The board of directors sets the stage for organizational and corporate success. It does this in three important ways:
- Focus on people — populate and support a top-notch board of directors; secure responsible management; build and maintain mutually-supportive partnerships with shareholders and stakeholders,
- Focus on good governance processes — lead with, and continually monitor, efficient and effective policies, systems and processes,
- Focus on the long term sustainability of the organization — set long term, high level goals and seek to achieve those goals in an ethical manner.
With the right people, the right processes and the right focus, a board truly adds value — at the board table, for the company or the organization, and for society overall.
In its leadership role within an organization or a firm, a board influences everyday lives in many ways.
Good governance leads to:
- Corporate success and satisfied customers, sustained employment, increased share value and investment security;
- Well governed and successful family enterprises, recognition of business founders and entrepreneurs, unified families and successful business transition;
- Public sector agencies who deliver, efficiently and effectively, much needed public services such as health care and quality education;
- Appropriate and timely social services for those in need of counseling, housing, financial support;
- Well-regulated agencies that ensure public interest representation in professions and industry;
- Community, recreational and cultural programs and services that benefit communities; human interaction and connectedness, appreciation of arts and culture and healthy bodies and minds;
............ the list is endless.
